A visit to the Historic Gandhi Ashram and much more.!!

October 2 is widely celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. I had visited the very famous Gandhi/Sabarmati Ashram on the anniversary and came back with lots of good things to talk about. However, I am too small a person to say even a word about the great man. You can have a look at the Ashram here.
The atmosphere was extremely electric and turbo charged with school students taking out a rally supporting the views of the great Mahatma. The place was brimming with energy which was very infectious for all the people present over there. There were many things such as pens, key rings, books imbibed with Mahatma's messages for sale as usual. Many visitors thronged the place which made the morning and the day even better with nice breeze blowing across the place which is on the banks of Sabarmati river. Here are few snaps which I managed to capture:
This one is probably the best place to just sit there and ponder about the various puzzles of life.

A view to right side of the Ashram.

This one's to the left and the bridge is visible very clearly which makes for an enchanting experience.

Overall the Ashram contains every detail of Mahatma and there is a section of it which is used for teaching underprivileged children. The place is very delightful and you can be yourself; free from all the burdens, problems, rigid and complex ideas. You can stay there for hours, read a book, write some poetry or probably fret over some things.

  2. It seems from your blog that you are a fan of Mr gandhi...

I'm not sure if you know the complete story about MK gandhi.
He is the one who advocated the divide by Caste. Do you even know how he treated his wife? I am sure you dont. The person you label "Great" wasnt really one. take the Bhagat Singh hanging for instance.he Gandhi Irwin Pact, which restored confiscated land and freed political prisoners. Gandhi had allegedly signaled that he would not break the post civil disobedience truce to stop Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev's hanging. And the government promptly sent the three to the gallows. This led to an immense wave of anger against the Congress leadership and specifically Gandhi. Congressmen waived black flags against Gandhi for next couple of days.
    2) He is someone i call "Fattu".What he did was light the fire and then run away...take the Chauri Chaura incident for instance. As soon as the moment gained momentum he withdrew the protest. and why he did that? Coz apparently a couple of british officers fired on "UNARMED" protesters which angered the crowd, who in reply and SELF DEFENCE attacked back..killing all the British officers there.
    3) Foisting Nehru as the leader of the Congress and India's first Prime Minister
Sardar Patel was easily the most popular. Everyone knew his efficiency and toughness for tackling difficult problems. 12 out of 19 State Congress Committees nominated him; none nominated Nehru. #FACT
From the start, Gandhi had indicated that he favored Nehru. His reasoning was that his British education was an asset: "Jawaharlal cannot be replaced while the charge is being taken from the British. He, a Harrow boy, a Cambridge graduate and a barrister is wanted to carry on the negotiations with the Englishmen." How the fuck does one person decide if someone can make a country work or not..MK went on and said "If the PM requires to go out of INDIA,he would need to speak english which sardar cannot".
Dr. Rajendra Prasad (India's first President) later stated: "Gandhi has once again sacrificed his trusted lieutenant for the sake of the glamorous Nehru." Dr. Rajendra Prasad (India's first President) later stated: "Gandhi has once again sacrificed his trusted lieutenant for the sake of the glamorous Nehru."

Mr gandhi was a blackmailer..who used fasts as a method.

"If the lower caste people leave their ancestral professions and adopt another profession, their expectations will rise and they will lose their mental balance and ultimately their family’s peace will be destroyed." These are the words of Gandhi...you sure can get a feel of what mindset he had.
And if you think That The people of India caused the british to leave our country...and by people I mean gandhi and Nehru..sardar too. then you are totally wrong. By the start of 1945,The british empire faced huge losses and didnt have the money to keep ruling the world. Their economy crumbled. Their army didnt have rations. In other words,They couldnt afford to Run out country any longer, hence they decided to leave

I am actually happy that Nathuram Godse assassinated Gandhi coz that way our country got a new mindset.

  3. I am by no means not advocating all the activities carried out by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi but you need to appreciate whatever he has done for the country and this is what I have done here. There is absolutely no doubt that some of the actions of MK Gandhi were questionable and one of them was appointing Nehru as PM instead of a more deserving Sardar Patel.
And getting into how he treated his wife is not our job; it's his personal choice and I guess you and me are not the right persons to talk about it. There is always two ways to look at things; You can look at negative things about him while I'll look at more brighter side of the story.
Whatever you have mentioned here may be true but over and above this he has done immensely to improve the state of affairs in our country(which is not mentioned here, If you need some proof then head off to some library and get some history books specifically Indian Independence)and he has motivated innumerable people to fight for the freedom. And there must be some rationale behind calling him 'Mahatma'.
Any ways, You are not the right person to say that he was not great. I am not a big fan of Gandhi but I admire him. Instead of cribbing about things, look to appreciate what he has done.
Tell me Post Gandhi what this new mindset which you claim has done??

  4. What brigh side does Gandhi's story has? i dont see any.
and What good thing did Gandhi do for our country? He brought Non violence? I sure dont think so...
It is a cruel joke and one of the biggest fabrications of the twentieth century that Gandhi won Indian freedom without spilling a drop of blood. The truth is that it was the devastating effect of World War II that forced the British government to dismantle its Colonial Empire. Moreover, it was Gandhi and his dominated Congress party that engineered the partition of the country on communal lines, as the Muslim dominant states stood in the way of high caste Hindus to set up their Ram Raj (mythical Hindu kingdom) based on caste ideology. Additionally, the Partition of India in 1947 is one of the major upheavals of the twentieth century. In the State of Punjab alone, 11-12 million people lost their homes and hearths where their ancestors had lived for centuries. May be as many as one million people perished in the communal frenzy and thousands of young women were kidnapped while Gandhi was reciting the murderous sermons from his favorite scripture – Bhagvad Gita. He kept insisting up to the last moment that the country would be partitioned only over his dead body!

  5. The new mindset- International markets were opened up which Gandhi opposed. this brought millions of jobs to us Indians. For the first time,India felt the need to strengthen the defence forces to tackle China.

  6. Do you know As a lawyer in London, he got nowhere at all. He was practically a failure there.
Most of Us indians think that he was the one who 'Invented' Civil disobedience movement..but thats not true. He practically copied David Thoreau's idea which he wrote about in his book.
Do you know Gandhi supported Hitler? He said that what Hitler was doing was right for his country...in other words,he justified violence and on the other hand advocated non violence.. hypocrite!

  8. Paavan - This comment is belated since this when I read this, but that only one side of the story, have considered that he sent his wife and family to small villages in bihar to improve sanitation there?
Do u think that he cud have Bhagat singh and co. off? Was he the president or attorney general or the judge to there trial, the only thing he cud do is apply political pressure - but if he that it would be politicians controlling the Judiciary which almost makes Independence redundant and how can u justify that act?
As for opening the international market is concerned, that happened in 1991 admittedly because we had no choice, but how can you say that it was the right thing to do in 1947?
U claim that he practically copied David thoreau's idea, whats wrong with that? If we start following the principles of honesty, discipline and accept responsiblity, he it is enough for the country's smooth running.
If you talk about having no bright side to Gandhi's story, here are few things that he managed to achieve - He was the most followed leader and hence the biggest source for Indians to realise that they can fight against the british, you think its a simple task uniting the Indian people?
He is a huge source of making people aware of the british are bad for the country and people and how things can be better - Consider this U have a empire(britsh) and princely states with there own kings, how do u think we became a country called India if we weren't united?
In 1947 the caste system was so much more radical that getting the constitution to admit that all castes are equal in status and to even get the so called lower castes represented in the drafting committee would have been a big issue(I personally am not a supporter of reservation, but in 1947 surely it was required)
You clearly state that Sardar patel was the better candidate for the PM seat, but did you consider that Sardar patel himself withdrew from the post and suggested Nehru?
Paavan you are not the right person to talk about Gandhi coz you are not an expert on Gandhi or someone who was there during the time of the freedom struggle
